what is the tv format in buenos aires, pal or ntsc?

xtracker2k9 asked:

I’m buying a place in buenos aires and wondering if my tv will work there? it is a new model hdtv with ntsc/atsc. Also, do these formats even matter when it comes to cable or satellite? Or are they just for local stations?
Thanks.

Argentina is PAL for analog TV , but has not decided on the digital format.

Even if you have a set-top box, the format is still important.

Argentina uses PAL, but a special version of it. Apparently it can carry the NTSC sub-carrier with it. I have never dealt with that type of a system so don’t know the ins/outs of how it would impact your TV usage there.

In theory though, yes NTSC vs PAL does matter a lot when it comes to cable or satellite. In terms of frame size in standard definition NTSC is 720×525 (486 viewable), but PAL is 720×625 (576 viewable). And the signals are carried by different frequencies. NTSC is 60Hz and PAL is 50HZ. In terms of HD, the frame sizes become the same, but the frequencies are still different.

But again, I don’t entirely get how the Argentinean version of PAL (PAL-N) works with the NTSC subcarrier it holds. It could well mean your TV will actually still work just fine there, but I can’t say for sure unfortunately.
