What all do I need to do to watch HDTV? ?

funinsun asked:

My tv has built-in ATSC digital / NTSC analog tuner, receives conventional analog broadcasts, as well as digital broadcasts, including HDTV programming where available. However the manual says I must have a source of HD programming in order to take full advantage of an HDTV. Otherwise, the picture quality of an HDTV without an HD source may not be much better than that of a standard-definition TV. What else is needed? I would like to avoid having to purchase any more service/equipment from my cable company if at all possible. If you can explain in really simple terms that would be great. Thanks for your hep.

    HDTV aspact ratio is 5:3
so buy those DVDs which is HDTV recorded 5:3 ratio to get the full pic quality

You need a signal source of some sort for an HD signal. That could be a regular over the air antenna (if you are in an urban area close to broadcast towers (http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx will help you find out)).

Or you will need a HD cable box or an HD satellite box. That sort of thing usually costs $10 additional per month over what you are now paying.

The other alternative is a blu ray DVD player… this would not be needed to watch TV even though you would be watching the DVD on the TV.

The aspect ratio is 16:9, not 5:3
