Watching analogue signal with a built-in ATSC?

Mike_Platini asked:

I’ve just bought a LCD HDTV with a built-in ATSC tuner (not NTSC tuner). Does that mean that I could not watch traditional analogue programs (NTSC) ?

Thank you.

Many times TVs will feature that they have an “ATSC tuner” and not mention the NTSC tuner. (they take that for granted.) They advertise the tuner to tell you that you don’t need cable or satellite to receive high definition programming. You can connect a UHF antenna to the TV (either set top or roof top) and receive HDTV and DTV channels. (if you live in a city and want to try an antenna go to to find out what kind to use).
If it truly does not have an NTSC tuner, it’s not that you cannot watch traditional analog programs, it’s that there is no tuner to change the channels. You would need to connect another source with a tuner (a VCR, or a cable box or satellite box) to change channels. (of course you would have to subscribe to cable or satellite too ;) )
And if you have a cable box or satellite box and are not using an antenna, tuners just don’t matter at all. And…if you do use OTA (over the air or use an antenna) your ATSC tuner, puts you in the perfect place for the digital transition/analog turnoff on Feb 17, 2009.
