Can I get over-the-air HD channels on my HDTV with an antenna?

It’s a brand new Sony Bravia, and it has a built in ATSC™/NTSC tuner. When I go to my grandma’s house out in the country (she uses an antenna to get channels), she gets a much better picture than I do with cable in town. I don’t have an antenna on my TV, but I can still switch to antenna mode somehow. When I do that, I get the same quality channels as I did with cable. Would an antenna help me get the same quality picture as my grandma gets at her house?
