My new HDTV has a built in ATSC Tuner, does that mean that I can recieve free HDTV?
Justin G asked:
At my college you just plug in the cable wire to you tv and that’s the free cable you get. Would I get HDTV that way? Or would I have to get a cable box and HDTV Service? I heard that if you have an integrated ATSC Tuner in your TV you can get free HDTV, is this true?

You can get FREE over the air HD…but cable you have to pay for it to be turned on….and you would have to rent a box to descramble the signal and send it out to the TV using HDMI or Component cabling….

Your TV only displays what it is being told to display. If the signal coming into an HD Tuner, thats what the TV will display. If you are not receiving a HD signal you will not display an HD picture.

Technically, you do not get free cable. Your college is paying for the bill. If you were getting free cable, that would be illegal.
As for the ATSC tuner, this will allow you to get over the air (OTA) HD broadcast. Purchase an HD antenna and you get HD stations that are in your area. You are not going to get ESPN or movie channels, but you will get HD broadcast of the standards (ABC, NBC, CW, CBS, etc.)
If you were going to get HD through your coax, you would need a digital set top box and you would need an HD subscription. Most colleges only subscribe to the standard analog package, which is 70-80 stations.
