No you do not need a converter box. The “ATSC” tuner listed in the specs is what receives over the air digital broadcasts.
If you are already using it for analog reception, go into your software and have it scan for digital antenna signals.
Most areas in the US already have digital broadcasts.

IT ONLY RECORDS from an antenna source, which can just be off air, you would need to purchase directv for the programming source
