Do you really need a ATSC tuner built in with a VCR/DVD combo player?

triumph2004@verizon.net asked:

i have a HDTV
but now im planning to buy a VCR/DVD combo player to go with my old fashion CRT TV because i don’t need a HDTV inside my room, I just need to watch old tapes and regular DVDs…I have cable TV so I don’t think the free to air channel would be a problem when it official changes to digital broadcasting in early 2009, I don’t think I really need to have a ATSC tuner built in with the player then?

based on how you describe your usage, you probably dont need it. If cable is going to be your source for that TV then you should be fine.

You will not need an ATSC tuner for digital cable, you would need a QAM tuner (sometimes called 8vsb). Its a gamble as to wether or not the cable companies will send analog signals down the cable or digital. They may want to make you pay an extra $10 for renting their box to decode digital to analog.

If you have the cash to spare, my opinion would be to get the digital tuner.

ATSC is for over the air digital only, not cable.
