Do I need to buy HD box for my new HDTV to watch in high def?

Saturday, January 30th, 2010
wayne l asked:

I just bought a HDTV with built-in NTSC and ATSC tuners, and built-in QAM cable tuner. Do I need to rent an HD box from Comcast to watch the basic cable channels in high def, or should the channels already be in high def once I install the basic cable?

Will a HDTV that I buy in the US work in other countries that use PAL?

EB asked:

I thought the ATSC format is a superset of the NTSC and PAL formats, which basically means that a HDTV that I buy here can work in the UK, Middle East or India. Does anybody have sufficient technical knowledge or actual experience to confirm this? Thanks…

Do I need HDMI cables to hook up surround sound and HD DVD player to my HDTV?

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010
dork asked:

1080i / 720p / 480i / 480p digital compatibility
Progressive scan
Built-in speakers (10 watts x 2)
Stereo sound with simulated surround sound
HDMI input
VGA (D-sub) input
Two component inputs (YPbPr / YCbCr)
S-video input
Composite video input
Two TV / CATV coaxial RF inputs (1 digital ATSC, 1 analog NTSC)
Five audio inputs
Audio output (RCA)
Coaxial digital audio output 1
These are some of the specifics of my HDTV. It only has 1 HDMI input and I have an HD DVD player that only has 1 HDMI ouput. I planned on connecting them. The HD DVD player has Dolby True HD and DDplus. However, I really want to purchase surround sound, but I don’t know anything about it or cables. Is there a way to have an HDMI cable hooked up to a surround sound system even though I only have the one output that I plan on using for the player? Is it necessary? Any advice on what I should do and what cables to use to hook everything up would be very much appreciated.

built-in QAM cable TV tuner receives unscrambled programs without a set-top box (cable service required)

do I need an antenna if I have a cable box?

I’m buying the samsung LN-40A650
(https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0014175NE/km-20/ref=nosim) in a week or so and don’t have cable. If it has an ATSC tuner and it hooks up to my antenna in the attic via coax, will I get local HD Stations? I live in PA, zip code 18969.

Thanks for the responses but if it’s an attic antenna, will I still I have to rotate it in order to pick up different stations?

lansing h asked:

I have a “SONY BRAVIA” KDL -32L4000.

720p built-in ATSC Digital Tuner. What’s this?

HDTV with ATSC/ QAM Digital Tuner.

What does this help me with when it comes to the new dtv?

Would’ I still have to use a CONVERTED BOX to watch my channels or will I be fine without one?

I am clueless about: HDTV, ATSC/QAM Digital Tuner and CONVERTED BOXES…

Also, which will it be the best converted box to buy for this TV?

Or which tools will I need for this type of TV and the new programming?

I will really appreciate any great information…Thank you
